World Class Seminar

Yesterday I traveled to London ON to attend and train at the Triple Threat Seminar hosted by Modern Martial Arts. The lead instructors were Professor Steve Stewart, GM Ken Smith (Tapi Tapi) and GM Leon Jay (Small Circle Jiu Jitsu) backed up by Master John Mellon.

First, let me say that it was a pleasure to spend time on the mat with these individuals who are absoulutely world class martial artists. Second I really enjoyed the energy of the day as they kept the information flowing and the mood very light.

Professor Stewart started the day off going over a few kyusho points that were good introductory points for the beginners and I spent most of this time helping my seminar partner get an understanding of how to work these points to gain maximum advantage. He was genuinely impressed with how much extra result one could generate by working the points properly compared to working a technique without the kyusho knowledge. Never once did I "give" him a result, I made him earn it, and when he did the results were always immediate and substantial.

GM Leon Jay then took to the mat and impressed us all with his ability to manipulate an individual in any direction at will. His guidence regarding finger locking will stick with me forever as will will Master John Mellons guidence on wrist and elbow manipulation.

GM Ken Smith was last up and he started by putting us through some stick work drills and ended up with a few open hand finishes. GM Smith is a highly decorated teacher and as he made his way around the mat I could sense his genuine concern for making sure all the participants were working the techniques properly and retaining the information.

All in, it was eight full hours of mat time. I was keen to listen to GM Jay talk to a small group of black belts at a break regarding the importance of his internal work. He was expressing how important his internal training was in order to maximize his ability to generate power and control.

It was a good day and I look forward to incorporating what I have learned into what I do and then sharing it with everyone.

Peace

Rod
